The Institute

The K J Somaiya Institute of Management Studies & Research was started in the year 1981 and has been consistently ranked among the top 20 business schools by various ranking bodies & magazines. The Institute is certified as ISO 9001: 2008 and ISO 29990: 2010 by Bureau Veritas Certification. It has received the South Asian Quality Assurance Certification (SAQS) accreditation by Association of Management Development Institutions in South Asia (AMDISA).  It is also a member of ‘The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business’ (AACSB).

The Institute provides all learning and personal development resources in terms of state-of-art infrastructure, learned faculty, well-endowed library with 70,000 books and approx. 27,000 titles, online databases and journals, computer labs, wifi across the campus, various sports amenities including a world class athletic track and a truly academic environment in a lush green campus in the heart of Mumbai. Apart from the regular PGDM programme, the student will have an opportunity to explore other learning opportunities in the sister Institutions of Somaiya Vidyavihar including foreign languages like Mandarin, Japanese, German, Spanish and French etc.

Program highlights

  • Fifteen months full time AICTE approved program in General Management comprising of five trimesters of twelve weeks each.
  • Intake: 60 seats.
  • Started in the year 2011, ranked 19th by Shiksha.com in the one year MBA program category.
  • Open to students from India and abroad including Non-Resident Indians (NRI’s), Persons of Indian Origin (PIO’s) and Foreign Nationals (FN) within the intake of 60 seats.
  • The first two terms comprise of core courses that forms the foundation of the general management program.
  • Terms IV and V comprise of general management subjects in the areas of Marketing, Finance, Organizational Behavior & Human Resources and Information Technology with a focus on Leadership, Change Management & Strategy.
  • Term IV includes a Corporate / Industry Internship with an organization to enhance the learning of managerial roles.
  • Delivery of subjects will be based on an Industry mentor linked with a Faculty anchor.
  • Capstone projects are undertaken in Term V.
  • Experienced Alumni mentors and in-house faculty members engage and mentor the students.
  • Workshops on emerging topics will be included which will be conducted by both internal faculty and industry veterans to add a new dimension to the subjects undertaken.
  • The program has an optional international immersion assignment with an aim to provide additional exposure to the students.


The facilitation in this program is application oriented. Students are taught through a mix of case studies, practical assignments, workshops, simulations, amongst others. They are taken for industry visits to get a firsthand understanding of various organizational processes – be it manufacturing or logistics in a retail organization. Additionally, students are encouraged to keep themselves abreast of current affairs, management tools and techniques through periodic programs sponsored by the Institute. Further, students are encouraged to attend MDPs conducted at SIMSR by International and in-house faculty. The course also includes teaching/mentoring  by international faculty and specialists.
