Dr. Prema Basargekar is currently working as Professor in the areas of economics and entrepreneurship management at K.J. Somaiya Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai.  She has more than 30 years of experience in the field of research and teaching.  She has done her PhD from BITS Pilani in the area of impact assessment of microfinance programmes on the empowerment of women.  Prema has also completed the Entrepreneurship Educator’s Course from Stanford Technology Ventures Program, Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore and the National Entrepreneurship Network.

Currently, she is a programme coordinator for MBA Healthcare Management. This programme was launched in July 2018 with a view to building the managerial competencies of budding managers in the growing healthcare sector in India. Prema's research and experience in teaching economics, entrepreneurship, social entrepreneurship and welfare organizations help her take a holistic view of the programme. It has been her endeavour to strengthen the programme by making it industry relevant by covering the breadth and depth of the subjects, introducing new subjects, and providing experiential learning, to the students.   

Her areas of research interest are Public healthcare, Healthcare policies, Entrepreneurship, Microfinance, Social entrepreneurship and Impact assessment of social programmes. 

She teaches Fundamentals of Health Economics, Macroeconomic aspects of Healthcare, Managerial economics, Macroeconomics and Entrepreneurship Management.
