We are pleased to announce a workshop and site visit to Junnar caves, with Dr Shreekant Jadhav, (Retired Superintendent of Excavation, Department of A.I.H.C & Archaeology, Deccan College, Pune) on the theme of Archaeology of Trade and Rock-Cut Caves during the Satavahana period in Junnar: Introspection through excavation and Inscriptions.

Junnar is a small town and taluq headquarters in Pune District. It was an important centre of Buddhist learning during Satavahana period from 2nd Century BC to 3rd Century AD. Of the sites of Buddhist rock-cut excavation in Maharashtra, Junnar has the largest number, with more than 200 caves. Most of these caves belong to the early schools of Buddhism.
 
Before the site visit will be a two-day workshop, during which Dr. Jadhav will focus on the theme in two classroom sessions:

 9th March,2019 : 3 pm to 6 pm

10th March,2019 : 11 am to 1.30 pm

This will be followed by a site visit on 16th and 17th March, 2019.

The visit involves some amount of trekking and therefore a spirit of adventure!
