K. J. Somaiya Institute of Management was established in the year 1981 as a part of Somaiya Vidyavihar with the objective of providing state-of-the-art education in management and allied areas.

Infrastructure facilities are as follows:

  • Institute is spread across two spacious, well-furnished buildings covering an area of 150,000 sq. feet. It consist of AC Classrooms, Multiple Seminar Halls, Conference Rooms, Student Discussion Rooms and Wi-Fi enabled Campus.
  • Institute provides separate hostels for girls and boys, namely, MAITREYI and SANDIPANI respectively. Hostel is well equipped with facilities like internet, Laundromat, student mess, activity room and well-equipped gym.
  • In terms of medical facilities, highly trained and experienced doctors are available on campus. There is a well-equipped medical room in the hostel and regular medical checkups of student are to done to assure they are mentally and physically fit.
  • Somaiya Sports Academy is an integral part of the Somaiya Vidyavihar Trust and has the international standard infrastructure for sports like Athletics (all disciplines), Lawn Tennis, Basketball, Badminton, Squash, Football, Volleyball, Roller Skating, Cricket, and a fully equipped gymnasium. Students of the campus have access to all the facilities, and also have exposure to coaching in various sports. We cater to individuals who aspire to compete at a high level and provide world-class coaching for the same with internationally certified coaches in all sports.
  • The computer centre is one of the best equipped IT centres geared to aid the learning process. Software package like SPSS, SAP-ERP, Rational Rose, AMOS (for structural equation modelling), and simulation games help in conducting data analysis for business and marketing research activities, analysis of case studies, preparation of summer training projects and concurrent projects.
  • The fully computerized library has more than 91000 books as on September 2017, CD’s and video films.
  • Housed in an area of 7,000 sq. feet, the library offers access to online data bases like EBSCO, PROQUEST, Euromonitor, Warc, CMIE PROWESS, ACE-Equity, NPTEL, CapLine, IEEE, J-Gate, Sage Research Methods, NAV India Software, EMIS World. The Institute subscribes to 150 Indian and international periodicals.
  • Institute also subscribes to Harvard Business School publications. K J Somaiya Institute of Management uses cases, readings, lessons and articles from HBSP.

Yes. Based on the values of the Somaiya Trust, the campus is totally vegetarian/non-smoking/non- alcoholic.

  • Keeping in view the food and personal habits, the NRI/OCI/FN students can stay outside the campus. If required, the Institute can assist these students to get appropriate paying guest accommodation. However, all students are encouraged to stay on campus to take full advantage of facilities offered on campus and to facilitate group learning and project work.

Yes, after admission, all the students have to undergo a medical test - however it is not part of selection process.
Students are recommended to have their own laptop. It is not provided by K J Somaiya Institute of Management.
There are limited scholarships available for economically backward students.
K J Somaiya Institute of Management does not provide any kind of bank loan assistance but it does provide all necessary documentation required by the Bank for processing of educational loan.
MBA – HCM & MBA – SM are sectoral specialization which have unique career paths. Students from certain graduation background may find these programmes niche and applicable as Super specialization in their area of interest.

MBA

MBA Programme has 600 approved seats plus supernumerary seats for FN/OCI/ CIWGC. The seats for NRI students are included within the 600 seats. It is two years full-time MBA Programme of K J Somaiya Institute of Management under Somaiya Vidyavihar University.
The programme will span over 2 years (4 Semesters) with a holistic course curriculum in which the first year will cover Foundation courses in management. In the second year, the students can specialize in one major and one minor area of their choice.
The students will choose their major & minor specialization in the second semester of their programme. The major & minor will be applicable for the second year. The Student has to choose 1 Major and 1 Minor.

It is not a residential programme.
The university has a separate hostel facility for boys and girls. Students have the option to be day scholars as well.
Yes, placement assistance is provided to the students. A full-fledged Career Management and corporate relations team helps in the placement of the students. Also, there exists a Placement Committee of students for driving the placement process. K J Somaiya Institute of management’s placement record has been excellent since its inception and students find placements in top organizations.
Yes. At the end of First year students will have to undergo live internship project also called as summer project for 2 months. The Career Management and corporate relations Department facilitates the process. The credit is awarded to all the students who successfully complete the internship.
For the major area of specialization students can choose one of the 5 areas for their MBA program. The credits for the major area are primarily concentrated in the 3rd and 4th semesters respectively.
Minor area of specialization can be the same as major to be super specialized or it could be another from a list of 8 areas offered in which the students can opt to get complementary skills. The minor is in 3rd and 4th semester.
Each student can choose a minor to supplement and complement their knowledge and skills as per their preferences. It is a freedom of possibility to be distinct.
Once the student has selected the major after the second semester, the student can change it only once i.e. before 15 days of the commencement of the third semester classes, similarly for the minor 15 days before the commencement of the third semester.
The Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC) specialization is a front-end super specialisation in Marketing. The IMC is the last mile in the marketing value chain function. The functions and strategies formulated under IMC help companies reach out to consumers at various physical and digital touchpoints. At the same time, marketing is a holistic function involving sales, distribution, consumer behavior, segmentation, targeting, positioning etc.
The major HR specialization focuses on HR functions, process and roles in the organizations to pursue a career in HR, it is HR as a Staff function.
The HR minor focuses on areas which are important to all managers including HR specialization managers as it focuses on the challenges of dealing with Human resource which are an integral part of managerial role irrespective of the specialization, it is HR as a Line function.

MBA IB

Master of Business Administration (International Business) is a general management Programme with particular emphasis on International Business which endeavours to make the students competent and versatile in specialized areas like Multinational Management, International Commodity Markets, Export-Import Policies, Intellectual Property Rights, Business in Emerging Markets, Country & Sectorial Strategies along with a compulsory Foreign Language

The focus is on creating a global mind-set and developing functional competencies necessary for operating in the changing International environment to develop cross-cultural sensitivity and foreign language capability.
Two years full-time Programme under Somaiya Vidyavihar University has the objective of developing versatile Master of Business Administration for higher managerial responsibilities in various industrial and commercial sectors. Students acquire competence in all the functional areas of Management and gain in depth domain knowledge in their chosen area of specialization.

The two year full-time residential MBA-IB programme approved by Somaiya Vidyavihar Unversity has the objective of developing versatile Master of Business Administration with a global mind-set for senior responsibilities in organizations and industrial/business houses and in companies with substantial international operations. In addition to developing competence in the various functional areas of Management they gain in depth expertise and domain knowledge in the various facets of International Business.
The admission procedure is common for all the Programmes at K J Somaiya Institute of Management. So, the aspirant has to fill only one form.
The courses in MBA IB course are concerned with the creation of the international business perspective and mindset. The emphasis is basically on exposing students to international business. The curriculum includes courses as Global Perspectives in Management, International Logistics and Supply Chain Management, International Market Research, International Business Strategy Models, International Finance (including FEMA), International Marketing, International Relations & Diplomacy, International Trade Finance, Multinational Management, International Commodity Markets, Export-Import Policies, Intellectual Property Rights, Business in Emerging Markets, Country & Sectoral Strategies along with a compulsory Foreign Language.

The courses chosen for this program are a sophisticated blend of foundation core courses, critical courses in functional areas and advanced level courses within the field of International Business. Each trimester consists of 7-8 full credit courses each with a mix of core and specialization courses.
There are no specializations offered in MBA IB as it is a specialized course.

MBA RM

India has a diversified retail sector undergoing rapid expansion, both in terms of existing retailers and new entities entering the market. Consequently, there is increased demand for professionals specialized to work in this industry. The RM programme was introduced considering this demand. This programme helps students to understand and face challenges in retail industry by offering specialized courses right from the first year. Biggest B-school Retail event in India is organized by students of MBA RM programme of K J Somaiya Institute of Management which also provides great learning opportunities.
Retail management course focuses on molding students into professionals specialized in retail industry and not general marketers. It provides specialized knowledge to students in areas like sourcing and merchandizing, shopper experience, visual merchandizing, property management and franchising, category management, retail finance, retail analytics, B2B retailing, E-Retailing, mall management, store operations, rural retailing, etc. MBA Marketing is about producing managers specialized in marketing with ethics and good governance and social skills.

MBA FS

MBA(FS) programme is aimed at providing students the knowledge about various aspects of Indian financial system like Micro and Macro-economic structure, investment markets, products and services. It covers all the functional areas in finance like Risk Management, Portfolio Management, Corporate Finance, etc. It also introduces students to areas like financial modeling, fixed income instruments, commodity markets, etc.

Consequently, there is increased demand for professionals specialized to work in this industry. The FS programme was introduced considering this demand. It provides knowledge about the field of finance right from the first year. It is a two year intensive programme focussed on producing highly skilled professionals who are able to work in core financial services profiles. The MBA core finance programme is designed to develop leadership skills in students with specialization in Finance only in the second year. It is aimed at producing management graduates with competency in chosen specialization rather than core finance professionals.
There are guest lectures of noted people from Finance industry arranged by committees. There is a Bloomberg terminal in college in case a student doing any research requires data. Also, Finstreet is the committee focused on finance industry which keeps you up to date about latest knowledge around the world.

MBA IMC

MBA(IMC) program focuses on the concepts are used by marketers and communicators to create impactful communication. It is based on the premise that to communicate effectively to a particular target audience a set of communications tools and techniques can be used-eg: TV, Magazines, Radio, Outdoor, and posters for a brand of toilet soap. The overall impact is more than the sum of the parts, therefore creating synergy in communication. Integrated Marketing Communications is used to create clarity, consistency and impact for communication.
Yes,MBA(IMC) is a specialization in marketing which focuses on developing corporate communication strategies, directing internal and external communication strategies, creating brand presence, brand building.. The programme endeavours to enable the participants to design, develop, execute and assess the impact of 360 degrees Marketing Communications campaigns to launch, build, maintain and rejuvenate brands.
Celebrity and sports marketing, event management, strategic brand management, media planning and media analytics are some of the distinct courses along with organizational behavior, marketing management and business perspective etc. which are similar to other MBA –courses.

MBA HCM

MBA-HCM is a two year full time Programme with specialization in healthcare management. The programme prepares managers who are keenly interested in working in healthcare sector. It looks at healthcare sector in a holistic manner such as Hospital Industry, Pharmaceuticals, Healthcare Consulting, Healthcare IT, Medical Devices, Wellness and Fitness, Medical Insurance, etc.
There is a need for specialized programme in healthcare management programme. Firstly, healthcare industry today is rising in scale as well as in scope. Rising per capita incomes, changing life styles, changing technologies, innovative medical solutions, all are contributing to the growth. Healthcare sector is amongst the fastest growing sector in India and worldwide, because of which there is a high demand of managerial skills in this sector. This high growth is expected to be there for next two-three decades. Due to this, there is a need of managers who can specifically work in healthcare sector for its development.

The industry needs the skilled manpower having a comprehensive understanding of all the aspects of healthcare sectors such as domain knowledge, technology, social aspects along with having managerial skill sets. At present, there is a huge gap of such skilled manpower in the industry. MBA HCM programme intends to bridge this gap.   • There are many healthcare domain specific subjects such as hospital administration, quality management in healthcare, bio-tech and pharma management, etc. to name a few.
  • Summer internship is essentially in the healthcare sector.
  • It has a profile based selection for candidates.
  • It has an academic collaboration with K J Somaiya Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre.
Although any graduate can undertake this programme, it is more suitable for students having completed graduation in healthcare related programme such as pharmacy, biotech, dentistry, physiotherapy, along with computer science/IT background, etc. Healthcare background includes all medical and allied health discipline. However, we do have students from other background such as B.A., B.Sc., non-IT Engineering, B.Com etc.
Besides all management courses of finance, marketing, operations, human resources and organizational behaviour, HCM also covers courses like epidemiology, pharmaceutical industry, hospital Administration, public health programmes, etc

The admission process will be as follows:

  • Candidates have to apply online through the Institute Website (Application Form)
  • Candidates have to appear for CAT 2023 / XAT 2024 / GMAT (Score valid from Jan 2021 to 18th Jan 2024)/ NMAT (Only 1st attempt will be considered) / CMAT 2024
  • Shortlisting of candidates will be Profile based.
  • Group discussion (GD) - Personal Interview (PI) will be conducted of the shortlisted candidates.The shortlisted candidates have to submit the Statement of Purpose (SOP)
  • Candidates will be offered the programme based on their positions and availability of seats.

MBA HR

Gaining insights into human behaviour is the building block of a true Human Resource professional. KJ Somaiya Institute of Management’s MBA-HR programme offers budding HR professionals the opportunity to learn human behavior and equipping students with the skill-sets to work with HR and people processes.

Students are trained to create, implement, execute and evaluate various HR functions. They gain knowledge and skills in key areas such as talent acquisition, learning & development, reward management, employee engagement, performance management within the organizational structure and culture.

On completion of the programme, students emerge as HR professionals with basic business and behavioral competencies to work in HR roles in public, private, entrepreneurial and social organizations.
General MBA programme is focused on general management offering 5 specializations in the second year, of which a few choose HR. The MBA HR programme at K J Somaiya Intitute of Management is a specialization HR focused program. It is designed to inculcate in every student qualities that are necessary for a Human Resource professional. It contains innovative and distinct programs that play a key role in developing an HR expert.

There are special workshops like Personal Growth Lab that instills self awareness, self-esteem and goal setting; interpersonal communication through transactional analysis; and emotional intelligence to develop empathy. This helps to develop better interpersonal and team understanding and insights into employees’ behavior at the workplace

Our Experiential Learning Initiative - Ankur, helps students hone their mentorship skills and develop their emotional intelligence. It is a program where students act as mentors to underprivileged children, and aid them in understanding their schoolwork and help them explore the practical application of their learnings. Being a student mentor teaches students ethics and allows them to boost their communication skills.

Some other program specific subjects offered in the course are Staffing, Performance & Reward Management, Learning & Development, Laws and HR, Culture and Ethics, and Technology & HR.
The HR function manages the most agile and dynamic resource of the organization, namely the human resource, through processes like hiring, selection, training, appraisals and rewards.

Post completion of the MBA HR course, students can be recruited for roles like Management Trainee, Assistant/ Associate Manager, HR Business Partner, Learning & Development Manager, Talent Acquisition Manager, Performance Manager, and HR Analyst.
Along with the curriculum, guest lectures by industry experts, live and concurrent projects, experiential- learning , research, participation in business competitions and events; the students enrich their learning experience. MBA-Sports Management is a specialized programme in the area of sports and sports-related management. The programme envisages the use of managerial skills and techniques to succeed in the area of sports-related management in companies, clubs, in the areas of large formatted games, for example IPL, managing club teams such as Mumbai Indians, etc. It also involves allied businesses in which the student can find career opportunities. It could be in the area of digital marketing, sports-related entities, in the sponsorship & licensing of sports properties, managing communication for brands that have got specific linkages in sports such as Nike, Adidas, and also involved in the area of retailing of sports goods, services, Apps, etc. The curriculum is focused on imbibing skills in all managerial functions such as marketing, finance, operations, HR, etc. to manage sports properties and entities profitably.
Sports Management programme includes courses that are in the area of business management, branding, marketing, media management, technology & analytics, leadership, strategy, and other related special topics in sports to equip the students to plan, manage, execute and monitor various sports-related programmes. So, as to make the entity succeed as a viable and profitable venture.Most of these specialized courses are unique and specific to the MBA Sports Management focused at building managerial talent in sports and sports-related industry and are not included of other MBA programmes.

The sports management field is a globally growing area. Automation and computations has evolved over the years, the archived information can be relooked at, to formulate new business rules, innovate the existing products and services, and eliminate the outdated processes. For these, all the organisations (private or public, micro or small –medium enterprises, large conglomerates) will need specialised Data Science and Analytics Professionals.
Yes. Being a specialised programme along with the functional and domain specific courses, the technological and analytics courses are covered as required by the current industry. Needless to say, trimester-wise course structure will differ. However, all the functional skills required are included in the structure.
Although any graduate can do this programme it is more suitable for those who loves to dig deeper into the data and generate newer and innovative insights. The course structure is designed in such a way that is provides for foundations grounding first and then moves on to advanced courses.
One need to take any one entrance exam out of CAT, XAT, CMAT, NMAT or GMAT. The shortlisting for this programme is based on qualifying test score. If shortlisted, you will be called for a process which includes Case Discussion & Analysis as well as Personal Interview.

Yes. The Institute can admit students for MBA Programme under supernumerary quota. These applicants can apply through CAT 2023 / XAT 2024 / GMAT (Score valid from Jan 2021 to 18th Jan 2024)/ NMAT (Only 1st attempt will be considered) / CMAT 2024. The applicants – if short listed- will have to appear for Group Discussion and In-depth Personal Interview. The admission to the programme under this category will be offered according to the result generated separately for applicants under these categories. The fee for these candidates is the same as the normal programme fee.

MBA in Healthcare Management & MBA in Sports Management are the two profile based programmes offered by the institute

For the profile-based programmes the aspirant needs to appear for any one of the qualifying entrance exams (i.e. either of CAT 2023/ XAT 2024/GMAT*/NMAT*/CMAT). The aspirants will then be shortlisted basis their profiles and entrance scores. The CA-PI process will be conducted Online.

The result declaration will be based on the evaluation of profile and performance in GD-PI as well as the statement of purpose written by the aspirant. The aspirants will then be offered the choice of programme based on their result, preference, and availability of seats for MBA-HCM only.
