Women’s Development Cell @ K.J. Somaiya Institute of Management is a vibrant and incessantly active collaboration of students, faculty, and staff; endeavoring to create a more inclusive, tolerant and gender sensitized community within campus as well as in society. As said by Chantal Partaian, Nasawiya, Lebonon - “I am a feminist because I believe in social change, equality and making society and the world a more equal place.”

Gender equality and empowerment of women have for long, remained an integral part of development policies and programmes especially for developing nations like India. Deemed as a mandatory requirement by the Government of India, UGC, and Human Rights; it is both a human right and development goal. Understanding and implementing gender inclusivity secure a significant place in higher education. We, at WDC not only recognize the importance of these development goals but also aim at broadening the dimensions within which these goals are perceived.

The WDC has been helping the institute build brand value to it and stand out as an entity for women’s welfare, from Somaiya Vidyavihar. We are here to create, maintain, and protect SIMSR's women and enable in sensitizing the importance of gender inclusivity in order to enhance it’s prestige.

Our year-long programmes and events primarily aim at creating awareness about issues still prevailing in our society; like gender sensitization, women’s rights, gender equality, Child sexual abuse, Girl Child education, NGO & orphanage visits, to name a few, and we are constantly endeavoring towards improving them. For all of the above and for redressal, we have dedicated members who are easily approachable and can be contacted personally, or through mail id, Facebook page and our website for redressal.

The Women’s Empowerment & Grievances Committee at K.J. Somaiya Institute of Management

We at WEGCOMM consider it to be our duty at K.J. Somaiya Institute of Management to deter and prevent commission of any kind of violence, harassment against the students or staff, to create mechanisms for the resolutions of any such incidents and to increase levels of awareness regarding discriminatory practices and behaviours.

The WEGCOMM will take appropriate actions to redress the complaint according to the University of Mumbai’s Guidelines and Code. Anonymity will be maintained throughout the proceedings.

WEGCOMM strives to maintain an environment of Gender Equality and Empowerment. It is NOT a committee only for Women. Our aim is to create an environment of safety and harmony to enable everyone to fulfill their duties with dignity.

  • To promote an environment of gender amity and sensitivity
  • To provide a forum for the redressal of complaints related to gender discrimination and sexual harassment at the workplace
  • To organize events, workshops and programmes on gender amity, women’s welfare and to recognize individual efforts towards equality and empowerment
  • To generate and disseminate information on gender sensitivity and women’s rights at the workplace

Sexual harasssment at the workplace has been one of the central concerns of the women’s movement in India since 1980. According to The Supreme Court definition, sexual harassment is any unwelcome sexually determined behavior, such as:

 
  • Physical Contact
  • A demand or request for sexual favors
  • Sexually colored remarks
  • Showing pornography
  • Any other physical, verbal or nonverbal conduct of a sexual nature
 

The Justice Verma Committee Report 2013 has suggested replacement of Section 375 defining rape by including specific unnatural acts such as intentional touching, use of words and gestures which create an unwelcome threat of sexual nature or advance, voyeurism and stalking.
